"The eleventh report is a compiled report from the WLE comprehensive network programme on Women and Work.
The transition to a market economy has been a painful process in the countries from East and Central Europe, applying for membership in the EU. Although women are gainfully employed to a very high extent, the process of transition has left women in a very dif.cult situation. Many of them have lost their jobs and their childcare or are working under bad conditions. In the other candidate countries, Cyprus, Malta and Turkey, the problem is different. In these countries women are gainfully employed to a very low extent and the traditional family model is very strong. However, for all these countries there is an urgent need to strenghten women´s position in the labour market and improve their working conditions."
