Transfer. European Review of Labour and Research - vol. 6 n° 3 -

"This article deals with the impact of foreign direct investment (FDI) on transformation processes in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE). Our specific interest is in the effects of FDI on the organisation of work and labour relations at the enterprise level; in a more general sense we are concerned with the contribution of FDI to the creation of the microeconomic foundation essential to functioning market economies. We hold that there is a discernible process of selective harmonisation taking place between outside influences and existing domestic factors. In this context we postulate that the importance of FDI is further enhanced by influencing a broad array of societal transformation processes beyond the enterprise itself, thus contributing to a process which could develop into what we have labelled a European-style environment. Admittedly, the outcome can as yet only be rudimentarily defined, especially since a European-style environment, as a point of reference, is itself currently undergoing continuous change. But we hypothesise that it will be a process which reflects to varying degrees both the endogenous and exogenous sources of its making."

"Issues of justice, freedom and equality have preoccupied humanity since the emergence of the earliest social communities.
The paths and steps towards achieving these general goals have been as varied as the places, people and organisations involved. Put simply, there is no single blueprint for social progress.
Movements in Europe resulting in improved social conditions have arisen from a multitude of factors and trends. Humanism, the Enlightenment, workers', women's and civil rights movements, the international peace movement and countless small- and large-scale currents and initiatives have contributed to social progress and emancipation in European countries. The pathways may have differed, but the goals have been the same.
Featuring examples from 13 nations across Europe, this publication aims to give readers a better understanding of how the situation has developed in these countries, to foster mutual learning and to encourage further engagement with the specific histories of social progress in Europe. This is a desire shared by all those who participated in this project. After all, recognising and accepting similarities and differences is one of the key prerequisites for developing viable ideas and programmes for a social, just and peaceful Europe."

"The COVID-19 pandemic facilitated a long-expected paradigm shift in the European Union's perception on health and healthcare. It has been proved that health policy decisions cannot be kept within a nation-state framework only, and that a new vision and strengthened community competences are needed to cope with public health crises.

Traditionally, EU member states have long been opposed to a greater role for the European institutions in health policy. Notwithstanding, growing disparities with alarming inequalities as to the health status of people across the 27 EU member states, and the differences in these people's access to quality healthcare, have the potential to seriously undermine the fundamental right to health.

The pandemic made it overwhelmingly clear that health is essential when it comes to the fair, resilient and sustainable development of our societies. Developing health systems indicators, a pharmaceutical strategy for Europe and a European cancer plan could be valid building blocks to construct a solid Health Union.

This policy brief presents the case of Hungary, with a look at its chronically underfunded and poorly performing health sector and an analysis of the national attitudes towards the European Health Union. Consultations with health professionals, local administrators and civil society evidence that the creation of a EU Health Union could contribute to catching up of the ailing national healthcare systems. A majority of the Hungarian society would see the European Health Union as a driving force to improve health outcomes in their countries and are supportive of more European integration in this domain.

Based on this, six areas of action are identified: planning, communication, joint research, equal access, primary prevention, and funding."

"The EU-OSHA Workers' Exposure Survey on cancer risk factors in Europe (WES) provides information on workers' probable exposure to 24 known cancer risk factors during their last working week. WES was conducted in Germany, Ireland, Spain, France, Hungary and Finland in 2023.
This publication presents the first findings of WES, highlighting the most common occupational exposures among the cancer risk factors considered, the circumstances of exposure and the link between exposure and some working conditions. Results show increased risk for workers in micro or small-sized workplaces compared to medium-sized or large workplaces, and for those working over 50 hours a week."

"The central question of the presented scientific monograph comparison of the party Czech, Hungarian and Slovak party systems is the identification of the affinity of the Slovak party system to the Hungarian and Czech party systems. The legitimacy of the question is because Slovak political parties as organized political groups began their activities in the period shortly after the Austro-Hungarian Compromise in 1867. Of them, only the Slovak National Party (SNS) was the only one that was not until the beginning of the 1st Czechoslovak Republic organizationally independent. More precisely, it did not form any partnerships with Hungarian or foreign political parties, for example by merging or creating electoral coalitions. During the period of Hungary, the oldest Slovak political party chose a fundamentally different political strategy, such as people or socialists, who first gained political experience in all-Hungarian political parties – the Catholic People's Party and the Social Democratic Party of Hungary. The Slovak social democrats gradually tried to achieve their organizational independence only at the beginning of the 20th century, but without success. After a short existence, they rejoined the Social Democratic Party of Hungary. The Slovak People's party worked towards political independence for a longer time. From the end of 1905, the so-called the Catholic wing of the Slovak National Party. They did not create their own party until shortly before the World War I in 1913. ...

SEER. Journal for Labour and Social Affairs in Eastern Europe - vol. 1 n° 3 -

"This article examines the emergence of the new Hungarian industrial relations system and the experiences of Hungarian trade unions in adapting themselves to the challenges of political democracy and the market economy. The article first outlines the historical legacy of trade unions and the industrial relations system. It then describes the dramatic changes which occurred in the wake of the transition of the late eighties-early nineties. After discussing the emerging crisis of the industrial relations system, it describes the attempts to reshape the system and the role of unions through the re-legislation of the Labour Code in order to facilitate the emergence of a stable system which conforms to European norms. Finally, the article evaluates the impact of the new legal regulation on the industrial relations system. In the Conclusion, the article argues that, although the open crisis of the national industrial relations system has been resolved in the early nineties, there is a ‘silent crisis' still going on."
