"The dismissal of the dancer María Fernández when she was three months pregnant highlights the insecure employment conditions to which dancers at the Spanish National Ballet are subject. The High Court of Justice (Tribunal Superior de Justicia), Madrid, has already ruled against the National Ballet 30 times or more for improper use of fixed-term employment contracts. The Court of Justice of the European Union has ruled to similar effect. It would appear that governments and businesses find it difficult to accept that artists too have employment rights."
