"Two methods of defining the care workforce in the Labour Force Survey are compared. The workforce was defined using the Standard Occupational Classification (SOC2000) and selecting occupations involved in care. This was compared with a definition using the Standard Industrial Classification (SIC92) and selecting the social work industry. This article presents the methodology used. The two methods give markedly different groups, although there is a large overlap. The appropriate method depends on the question being asked, although it is noted that the SIC definition excludes many involved in the direct provision of care."
