Socio-Economic Review - vol. 2 n° 2 -

Socio-Economic Review

"This paper gives an overview of the main areas of labour market research to which the Luxembourg Income Study (LIS) and the Luxembourg Employment Study (LES) projects have contributed and stresses how the characteristics of the two data-bases have allowed researchers to explore specific topics. Research results on income inequality and working time and on the relationship between low pay and poverty are reported as examples of original contributions made by LIS researchers to the respective fields. Finally, the results of a meta-analysis of journal articles on labour and population economics are used to determine which type of data labour economists use for empirical research and to formulate some suggestions for future developments of the LES database."

Economic and Labour Market Review

"This article gives some background to how the Labour Force Survey longitudinal data sets are constructed and looks at the benefits of this data source in analysing changes over time. The strength of the data is in looking at the flows of people between the three main economic activity states and this provides the main focus for the article. Changes in the proportions remaining in the same categories over the two time periods, along with changes in the size of the flows between the three main categories are investigated, and some broad conclusions drawn about their causes. Some background is also given to the methodological issues which users should be aware of when using the longitudinal data sets."

Economic and Labour Market Review

"The Labour Force Survey introduced two new questions in spring 2005 to find out if someone who is currently inactive is likely to work in the future and when this might be. The reason for adding these new questions is to collect more information from people who are currently inactive on their propensity to work in the future. It is then possible to look at whether these intentions are reflected in their labour market activity, using the longitudinal LFS data sets. This article gives an indication of the suitability of these new questions and investigates the characteristics of those inactive people who say they think they will definitely work in the future."
