"Trade unions in Europe can no longer act just in the context of the nation state; Europe, as an economic, social and political entity, is influencing more and more areas of trade union concern at national level. European law has effect in most European countries, whether they are covered directly through EU membership, through the extension of much EU law to the EEA or through the accession process to become a EU member. UNI-Europa representing working people from a wide range of sectors, including services, information technology, communication, media and graphical workers, offers a means for its affiliates to come together, learn about each other and act in solidarity to build a social and democratic Europe. This opportunity should be embraced. Globalisation of the economy and society has led to major changes in the international division of labour and production. The service sector has become the major source of employment in Europe and other advanced market societies. European integration has brought liberalisation and increased internal competition. However, European integration cannot be considered merely as a neo-liberal economic project. Developments in EU social policies and law have brought added value to every member state and traditionally national concerns are increasingly being discussed and shaped at European level (e.g. employment and social protection policies)."
