"The National Asbestos Summit took place at Esselen Park in Johannesburg from the 24-26 November 1998. This significant event heralds both the start of a process of greater public awareness as well as better management of a major health, safety and environmental problem. More than 200 delegates participated in a very positive and constructive way in a quest for practical, workable solutions to the complex and tragic problems related to the mining, milling, transport, manufacture and use of asbestos containing products in South Africa. The summit was the end result of a participatory process informed by the complexity and the gravity of the asbestos problem "
