"Report on Invisible Victims of Development – Workers Health and Safety in Asia: is an effort by the Asia Monitor Resource Centre (AMRC) to highlight the severity of the problem on the ground in Asia with a detailed report from 6 Asian countries – China, India, Cambodia, Philippines, Thailand and Indonesia. The absence of figures also highlights the invisibility of impacted workers and their families and most of the time even denial about their existence by governments in the region. Yet they exist on the ground- impacted due to hazardous conditions at work and denied justice in terms of compensation, rehabilitation and dignity forming the most marginalised and exploited section of society."

"Machines contain hazards of different nature and exposure to those hazards can result in injuries or deaths. Safety of machinery considers the ability of a machine to perform its intended function during its life cycle where risk has been adequately reduced. The principles of machine safety, risk assessment and risk reduction are covered in international standards, national standards, regulations and other literature. Moving parts of machinery still cause many serious injuries and fatalities. This paper aims at analyzing serious injuries and fatalities related to moving parts of machinery in order to understand the various reasons causing such accidents. As such, 106 accident reports related to moving parts of machinery from the province of Quebec in Canada have been analyzed. The main causes are easy access to moving parts of machinery, lack of safeguarding, absence of lockout procedures, inexperience of workers, bypassing safeguards, lack of risk assessment, lack of supervision, poor machinery design, unsafe working methods, no clear instructions to workers on how to intervene safely on machinery as well as modifications to machinery and to control systems. Prevention strategies are also proposed based on the findings and on the literature."

"This is an interview conducted with an oil and gas worker who was employed in the industry from 1993 to 2012. He requested that his name not be used. From 2008 to 2012, he drilled wells for a major operator in Bradford County, Pennsylvania. Bradford County is the center of the Marcellus shale gas boom in Northeastern Pennsylvania. In 2012, he formed a consulting business to assist clients who need information on the details of gas and oil drilling operations. In this interview, the worker describes the benefits and difficulties of the hard work involved in drilling unconventional gas wells in Pennsylvania. In particular, he outlines the safety procedures that were in place and how they sometimes failed, leading to workplace injuries. He provides a compelling view of the trade-offs between the economic opportunities of working on a rig and the dangers and stresses of working long hours under hazardous conditions."
