This study examines the levels, nurse/patient ratios, and skill mix of each category of nursing staff in Pennsylvania. It focuses on licensed nursing staff, which includes RNs and LPNs, because they share patient workloads in many work situations, and therefore a fall in levels of one staff category will effectively reduce the nursing/patient ratio in both categories.
