"Objective Using an observational research design and robust surveillance data, we evaluated rates of musculoskeletal (MS) injuries, days away from work, and restricted work days among patient care staff at a medical center and community hospital in the United States over 13 years, during which time a “minimal manual lift” policy and mechanical lift equipment were implemented. Methods Workers' compensation claims data were linked to human resources data to define outcomes of interest and person-time at risk to calculate rates. Poisson and negative binomial regression with lagging were used to compare outcome rates in different windows of time surrounding the intervention. Patterns of MS injuries associated with patient-handling were contrasted to patterns of other MS injuries that would not be affected by the use of mechanical lift equipment. Results At the medical center, no change in the patient-handling MS injury rate followed the intervention. A 44% decrease was observed at the community hospital. At both hospitals, the rate of days away declined immediately – before it was reasonable for the intervention to have been adopted. Conclusions Institutional-level changes at the time of the intervention likely influenced observed results with findings only partially consistent with an intervention effect. Observational studies can be useful in assessing effectiveness of safety interventions in complex work environments. Such studies should consider the process of intervention implementation, the time needed for intervention adoption, and the dynamic nature of work environments."

"This publication documents the relationship between gender inequality and health and safety problems. It reviews gender issues in research, policies and programmes on work and health, and highlights some specific issues for women, including the types of jobs they do, as well as their need to reconcile the demands of work and family. Biological differences between women and men also are considered in relation to hazards they face in the workplace. Implications of the findings and recommendations for legislation and policy are discussed. Women will be more and more involved in the global workforce, in both formal and informal work. In ensuring economic survival for themselves and their families they employ a variety of strategies, some of which entail great danger for their health. This review highlights the necessity to strengthen and put in place more and better programmes and practices so as to ensure women's health and safety at work, while facilitating their access to economic and social equality."

"Les liens entre état de santé et activité professionnelle constituent aujourd'hui une dimension incontournable de plusieurs champs de l'intervention publique (retraites, santé publique, emploi…). Qu'il s'agisse d'évaluer l'impact de la santé sur le maintien en emploi ou l'effet des conditions de travail sur la santé, les économistes développent aujourd'hui des travaux permettant de mieux saisir ces interactions et de participer à un meilleur éclairage des décisions publiques. Un état de santé dégradé apparaît clairement comme un frein à l'activité et un motif de départ précoce en retraite. Outre l'ensemble des mesures de santé publique visant à améliorer l'état de santé général de la population, ces études conduisent à s'interroger sur le rôle spécifique du milieu professionnel dans la préservation de la santé des salariés. Néanmoins, l'évaluation de la prévention en santé au travail comme la prise en compte des effets néfastes du travail sur la santé se heurtent à des phénomènes de sous-déclaration et de sous-reconnaissance des accidents du travail et des maladies professionnelles. Surmonter ces obstacles est un enjeu pour les analyses économiques."
