"As the world faces the challenges posed by climate change, the concept of a ‘Just Transition' (Newell & Mulvaney, Citation2013) has gained increasing traction in academic and policy debates in recent years as global efforts are made to attain Net Zero. Originally conceived by the trade union movement in the US in the 1980s (Young, Citation1998), in response to the impact of closures in traditional extractive industries such as coal mining on the workforce, the term ‘Just Transition' has come to embrace workers in all sectors (industrial and extractive) that entail CO2 production and consequent labour market status in a zero-carbon economy."
