"What can donation strategies tell us about corporate political preferences, as seen from the perspective of power resource and varieties of capitalism theories? This article tests six hypotheses within an Olsonian framework for corporate donations to political parties with new data from the 100 largest German firms between 1984 and 2005. The findings reveal that only a minority of firms donate, and donation amounts are surprisingly small given the financial assets of these companies, which suggests the presence of a collective action dilemma with small selective and arguably larger collective benefits. Management ties between firms are an important way of making firms overcome the collective action dilemma. Firms distribute their donations if any – mainly on the right side of the political spectrum, particularly if the firms are personally interwoven with other large companies or if they are family owned. However, some firms, particularly those belonging to the automobile sector, donate across the political spectrum."

"The concept of institutional complementarity is central to the recent debate on the internal logics of production regimes, redirecting our attention from the effects of single institutions to interaction effects. The article provides definitions of complementarity, coherence and compatibility and discusses the ways in which different authors describe interaction effects between corporate governance and industrial relations. It turns out that some of the interaction effects are actually direct causal links rather than effects deriving from complementarity. It is argued that complementarity may be caused by both structural similarity and incoherence, and that the concept provides only weak predictions with respect to institutional change. "

"The European Minimum Wage Directive triggered the most bitter internal dispute in the history of the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC), due to the fundamental opposition from the side of the Danes and Swedes. The article traces the Nordics' oppo sition to the directive and identifies two causes. The first cause lies in the – from a conti nental perspective – peculiarly low importance of legally enforceable individual labour law and the corresponding strength of collective rule-making. The second cause lies in the specific experiences that Denmark and Sweden had with European assurances that their collective models would be protected. In light of these findings, we deny that the attitudes of the Nordic trade unions testify, as suggested by Nussbaum Bitran and Dingeldey in issue 2023/2 of this journal, to a transnational solidarity deficit."

Die Integration ist in eine Phase eingetreten, in der sie die auf dem Kontinent vertretenen unterschiedlichen Wirtschafts- und Sozialmodelle systematisch transformiert. Dieser Band wendet die Erkenntnisse der Vergleichenden Politischen Ökonomie auf die europäische Integration an und analysiert Ursachen und Dynamiken europäischer Liberalisierungspolitik. Die Beiträge diskutieren "harte" Formen der Binnenmarktintegration ebenso wie "weiche" Formen wirtschaftspolitischer Koordinierung, führen in die Politische Ökonomie der Wirtschafts- und Währungsunion ein und fragen nach den Potenzialen europäischer Re-Regulierung."

"Liberalisierungspolitik bezeichnet die politisch herbeigeführte und politisch legitimierte Delegation von Allokations- und Distributionsentscheidungen an Märkte und zielt auf Durchsetzung der Prinzipien der Eigenverantwortung, der dezentralen Entscheidungsfindung und der Konkurrenz. Viele politökonomische Klassiker vertraten die Ansicht, dem Kapitalismus sei ein anhaltender Trend der Marktbeseitigung eigen, was den Eintritt in eine längere, mehrere Politikbereiche umfassende Phase politischer Marktschaffung unwahrscheinlich, wenn nicht gar unmöglich erscheinen ließ. Anhand von ländervergleichenden, zeitvarianten Indikatoren zu fünf Wirtschafts- und sozialpolitischen Sphären weisen wir in diesem Papier nach, dass die entwickelten Industriestaaten spätestens in den Achtzigerjahren in eine konvergente liberalisierungspolitische Phase eintraten, in der sie nicht nur parallele Liberalisierungspolitik betrieben, sondern sich hinsichtlich ihrer öffentlichen Interventionsniveaus auch spürbar ähnlicher wurden. Das zeigen wir anhand von Daten zu 21 OECD-Ländern im Zeitraum zwischen 1980 und 2005. Im Ergebnis unterscheiden wir zwei Dimensionen der Liberalisierungspolitik: regulatorische Liberalisierung und distributive Liberalisierung. Die empirischen Betrachtungen münden in eine Diskussion der empirischen, theoretischen und methodischen Implikationen von Konvergenz. "
