"The present material serves to raise awareness on the reality of platform work among national trade union organizations. The ETUI initiative responds to the identified training needs for a common approach to development of this topic at EU level, based on proposals expressed by the ETUC's member organizations. The ETUI's choice of the pedagogical design of this training material reflects the different trade union education needs/approaches existing in the affiliated organizations. The proposed programs have been structured in a general concept.

The suggested training formulas as well as the independent thematic units meet a wide range of needs:
• information on the concept of platform work, its evolution and impact on labour market;
• development of competences for trade union representatives involved in social dialogue in sectors with a high prevalence of platform workers;
• raised awareness on the importance of trade union action for decent working conditions for platform workers.

This training material provides trade union trainers with all the necessary pedagogical elements needed to deliver education activities at national level, compatible with various professional sectors as well as with different levels of time/resource availability."

ILR Review - vol. 72 n° 1 -

" In their comment on the article on Uber driver-partners by Jonathan Hall and Alan Krueger, the authors analyze the article's methodological problems, including sample bias, leading questions, selective reporting of findings, and an overestimation of driver earnings, which do not account for the full range of job-related expenses and is based on outdated data. The authors also argue that Hall and Krueger make unsubstantiated claims that extend beyond the scope of their research and ignore a rapidly growing literature that is critical of the Uber model as well as the broader for-hire vehicle industry in which Uber operates. As policymakers grapple with how to respond to transport network companies, the authors argue that a fuller understanding of the costs and benefits of services such as Uber is critical for making informed policies."

"Good working conditions contribute to the well-being of workers and the success of enterprises. But unbundling the everyday reality of women and men at work is not a simple task. This is particularly true in in our changing world of work, where new technologies and new forms of work organization are continuously being integrated into our workplaces.

As a result of their shared commitment to the policy goals of ‘decent work' and ‘improved job quality', the International Labour Organization and the European Foundation for the Improvement of Living and Working Conditions, have partnered to produce this report which makes a unique contribution by providing a comparative overview of results from the most recent surveys on working conditions available across the world, covering approximately 1.2 billion of the world's workers."

International Labour Review - vol. 159 n° 1 -

"The paper examines the geographies of collective labour struggle in the platform economy. It distinguishes between place‐based work and crowdwork in order to examine the unique spatial features associated with these different types of platform work and to explore the divergent collective organizing strategies developed by these two groups of workers. Drawing on three examples of social dialogue including works councils, collective bargaining and multiparty agreements, the paper attends to why different types of platform workers gravitate to particular collective organizing strategies, analyzes the regulatory frameworks within which their collective struggles are bound, and assesses the propensity for these expressions of solidarity to improve the terms and conditions of platform work."

"This paper examines how the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) can be used to address procedural problems faced by platform workers, including opaque rating systems, arbitrary account suspension and nonpayment, and uncommunicative clients and platform operators. GDPR provides workers with a variety of rights with respect to their data, including right of access, right to rectification, and rights regarding automated decision-making. Additionally, Art. 40 of the GDPR establishes the possibility for groups of controllers to develop codes of conduct that clarify the application of GDPR to their particular sectors. This paper details the application of GDPR to labor platforms, provides draft text for an Art. 40 code of conduct for labor platforms, and discusses how such a code could help address procedural problems encountered by platform workers. We hope that this paper can help spark a discussion at European level among trade unions and other stakeholders in platform work about how to use GDPR to address the ‘procedural problems' faced by platform workers, regardless of their employment status."
