Economic and Labour Market Review - vol. 3 n° 2 -

"This article briefly considers a few of the changes in the labour market in the last 20 years and how these adjustments relate to the economy in the UK. It acknowledges that, during 2008, the timing of movements in output indicators and labour market statistics differed. To explore this, the economic background to 2008 is discussed, by presenting aggregate economic indicators for a selection of international trade partners and looking at other statistics produced by the Office for National Statistics. Finally, the developments in commodity prices and government policy over the last year are recognised. "

Economic and Labour Market Review - vol. 3 n° 4 -

"This article analyses the experiences of young people in the labour market today, looking at their economic activity, earnings and skills, using the UK's Labour Force Survey. It also looks at the family and household circumstances of young people using education research and the Annual Population Survey. What is clear from these analyses is the importance of considering education status when looking at the labour market activity of this age group, as many young people are in a period of transition between school and work. The decline of manufacturing and rise of employment in the service sector appears to have been significant. And the impact of parental attitudes to education and of family background should also be considered. Evidence suggests those young people who are not in employment, education or training (NEET) are considerably more likely to be living with one parent or in a household where no one is working."

Economic and Labour Market Review - vol. 2 n° 7 -

"The Labour Force Survey (LFS) is the source for estimates of migrant workers in the UK economy. This article presents the most up-to-date LFS figures using the population estimates published in 2007. It updates figures for 1997 that have previously been released into the public domain, and also provides the most recent estimates. Given the recent public interest in the topic, this article seeks to ensure greater clarity and timeliness of migrant worker reporting from the LFS in the future, in line with the recommendations of the Inter-departmental Task Force on migration statistics (2006). It reviews the ways in which the LFS can provide migrant worker figures, and presents the new Office for National Statistics standard definition for migrant workers. "

It begins by considering published unemployment and part-time work estimates, showing potential labour supply in the UK economy. Analysis is then presented which develops a measure of time-related underemployment using the Labour Force Survey (LFS) which looks at the additional hours that people in employment want to work.Further analysis describes recent trends in underemployment levels and rates, noting the changes that occurred asthe UK economy contracted. The article also presents estimates of the volume of underemployment, in terms of the number of extra hours that underemployed people want to work, a useful indicator of potential capacity in the economy. "
