"Few people have made greater contributions to protecting and improving the environment than the scientist, teacher, author, activist Dr. Barry Commoner. For nearly fifty years, Dr. Commoner has been an international leader in the environmental movement. On the occasion of his eightieth birthday, in May 1997, a symposium was held at Cooper Union in New York City at which a series of invited speakers discussed Dr. Commoner's contributions to a wide range of environmental issues and campaigns. In this special issue of New Solutions, a selection of those invited talks is published. Also included are a few short contributions about Dr. Commoner's work from people who were not able to attend the symposium."
