"The United States National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has this week issued a recommendation that occupational exposures to carbon nanotubes and nanofibers be controlled to reduce the potential for certain work-related lung effects. NIOSH reports that research on carbon nanotubes/nanofibers has shown they can cause pulmonary fibrosis, inflammatory effects, and ganulomas in laboratory animals exposed to them by inhalation. These nanomaterials are increasingly being incorporated into different products to increase strength, durability, versatility, heat resistance, and other properties. Workers in the automotive, aviation, construction manufacturers of structural materials, textiles, batteries, and consumer products industries are routinely using them. NIOSH is the first federal agency to issue recommended exposure levels for these substances."
