"In a nutshell, the analysis developed in this thesis intends to answer the general question: “What has been the outcome of the involvement of major lobbies (business, trade unions, environment and consumers) on the EU regulation REACH?”. The legislation on chemicals before 2000 was ineffective and minimalist regarding the potential danger that chemicals posed to public health and the environment. That is why REACH (standing for Regulation, Evaluation and Authorization of Chemicals) was launched and aimed to register and evaluate 30 000 substances while setting up a system dealing with the most hazardous substances among these existing chemicals. REACH was also extremely ambitious considering its high level of technicality, the deadlines and the groundbreaking principles incorporated. ..."
