In this study, the lungs of 414 individuals (353 men and 61 women) who had died of lung cancer were examined for the presence of pleural plaques and asbestos bodies. Sixty percent of the men had worked in the shipbuilding industry and the women had a history of domestic exposure to asbestos. Results indicated that about 60 percent of the present lung carcinomas among men were plausibly attributable to asbestos.
