"One of the most significant pieces of EU legislation that will be finalised over the coming months is the AI Act, which is still a source of heated debate among policymakers and stakeholders. One of the key issues being discussed is how the Act should define Artificial Intelligence. In this short CEPS Explainer, Andrea Renda and Alex Engler argue in favour of a broader definition of AI, with a high degree of autonomy given to a dedicated AI Office to tailor the Act's application to the specificities of algorithms in individual sectors and use cases."

International Labour Review - vol. 155 n° 3 -

International Labour Review

"It is obviously important to harmonize national statistical definitions of employment, unemployment and inactivity – both for general accuracy and for international data comparability. This concise overview compares the statistical practices of Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Kosovo, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, Slovenia and Turkey in this respect. While all of these territories and countries rely on labour force surveys to collect the required data, they exhibit discrepancies as to the definitions, classification and labour market status of specific groups, particularly in regard to the statistical category of unemployment. The paper concludes with a plea for remedying these remaining discrepancies through further harmonization."

"This brisk and pungent guide to the use of words as tools of communication is written primarily for journalists, yet its lessons are of immense value to all who face the problem of giving information, whether to the general public or within business, professional or social organizations. What makes a good English sentence? How should you rewrite a bad one? What clichés and other word-traps are to be avoided? How do you shorten unnecessarily verbose source-material? Using a wealth of examples drawn from British and American newspapers, Essential English is an indispensable guide for all who have to convey information by the written or printed word."

Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health - vol. 55 n° 10 -

Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health

" Why “social epidemiology”? Is not all epidemiology, after all, “social” epidemiology? In so far as people are simultaneously social and biological organisms, is any biological process ever expressed devoid of social context?—or any social process ever unmediated by the corporal reality of our profoundly generative and mortal bodies? Yet, despite the seeming truism that social as well as biological processes inherently shape population health—a truism recognized even in the founding days of epidemiology as a scientific discipline in the early 19th century— not all epidemiology is “social epidemiology”. Instead, “social epidemiology” (which first attained its name as such in English in 1950) is distinguished by its insistence on explicitly investigating social determinants of population distributions of health, disease, and wellbeing, rather than treating such determinants as mere background to biomedical phenomena. Tackling this task requires attention to theories, concepts, and methods conducive to illuminating intimate links between our bodies and the body politic; toward this end, the glossary below provides a selection of critical terms for the field.
One brief note of explanation. Some entries contain only one term; others include several related terms whose meanings are interdependent or refer to specific aspects of a broader construct. Additionally, each entry is cast in relation to its significance to social epidemiology; explication of salience to other disciplines is beyond the scope of this particular glossary. "

Who is a worker? Davidov, Guy | 2005

Industrial Law Journal - vol. 34 n° 1 -

Industrial Law Journal

"The article focuses on the term ‘worker', which is replacing the traditional term ‘employee' in a growing number of Acts and Regulations. The interpretation given to this term by the Employment Appeal Tribunal is reviewed, and a different interpretation is suggested, with the aim of better achieving the purpose of the new category. It is argued that the protection afforded to ‘workers' should cover every work relationship that is characterised by significant dependency on the putative employer, even without the presence of democratic deficits (or subordination). It is shown that such a solution fits the logic of intermediate categories, as well as the legislated definition of the ‘worker' category."
