"Objective. Flight baggage handlers sort and load luggage to airplanes. This study aimed at investigating associations between psychosocial exposures and low back and shoulder musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) among Swedish flight baggage handlers. Methods. A questionnaire addressing MSDs (Standardized Nordic Questionnaire) and psychosocial factors (Copenhagen Psychosocial Questionnaire, COPSOQ) was answered by 525 baggage handlers in six Swedish airports. Results. Low back (LBP) and shoulder pain (SP) were reported by 70% and 60%, respectively. Pain was reported to interfere with work (PIW) by 30% (low back) and 18% (shoulders), and intense pain (PINT) occurred in 34% and 28% of the population. Quality of leadership was the most dissatisfying psychosocial factor, while the most positive was social community at work. Low ratings in the combined domain Work organization and job content were significantly associated with PIW in both low back and shoulders (Adjusted Hazard Ratios 3.65 (95% CI 1.67–7.99) and 2.68 (1.09–6.61)) while lower ratings in the domain Interpersonal relations and leadership were associated with PIW LBP (HR 2.18 (1.06–4.49)) and PINT LBP and SP (HRs 1.95 (1.05–3.65) and 2.11 (1.08–4.12)). Conclusion. Severity of pain among flight baggage handlers was associated with psychosocial factors at work, suggesting that they may be a relevant target for intervention in this occupation."

Applied Ergonomics - vol. 45

"The objectives of this study were to develop a questionnaire that evaluates the perception of nursing workers to job factors that may contribute to musculoskeletal symptoms, and to evaluate its psychometric properties. Internationally recommended methodology was followed: construction of domains, items and the instrument as a whole, content validity, and pre-test. Psychometric properties were evaluated among 370 nursing workers. Construct validity was analyzed by the factorial analysis, known-groups technique, and convergent validity. Reliability was assessed through internal consistency and stability. Results indicated satisfactory fit indices during confirmatory factor analysis, significant difference (p < 0.01) between the responses of nursing and office workers, and moderate correlations between the new questionnaire and Numeric Pain Scale, SF-36 and WRFQ. Cronbach's alpha was close to 0.90 and ICC values ranged from 0.64 to 0.76. Therefore, results indicated that the new questionnaire had good psychometric properties for use in studies involving nursing workers."

Safety Science - vol. 80

"IntroductionIn the past few years much progress has been made in European Union in recognizing the importance of the work-related stress risk, and in adopting specific measures to assess such type of risk. In Italy, the legislative framework on occupational health and safety confirmed the obligation to assess the risk for work-related stress, according to the European Framework Agreement.Material and methodsThe Italian Workers' Compensation Authority developed a methodology for the assessment of work related-stress risk as an integrated management risk approach comprising two main assessment tools: a checklist for measuring objective and observational risk indicators and a validated questionnaire to collect employees' perceptions. This study aimed to explore the convergence degree among the results of the two assessment tools in a sample of 137 companies.ResultsBy applying the univariate ANOVA the mean values of the questionnaire were compared to the levels of risk obtained in the preliminary assessment. The analyses highlighted that when the risk is higher in the preliminary assessment, there is an increase in the perceptions of the risk factors. In line with Cohen's methodological guidelines findings revealed moderate values. Finally, the analysis of discrepancies shows a good concordance level among the results of the two assessment phases.ConclusionsThe study highlighted the effectiveness and reliability of the INAIL's methodology. Such process enables companies to use two complementary tools for a more complete definition of the risk factors, in order to develop interventions"

Consistent with current emphasis on the visual and aural, the new edition is complemented by copious examples within the text and accompanying website.

This heavily revised Fourth Edition includes:

Strategies and tactics for determining the needs of a given survey, how to design it, and how to effectively administer it
How and when to use mail, telephone, and Internet surveys to maximum advantage
Proven techniques to increase response rates

Guidance on how to obtain high–quality feedback from mail, electronic, and other self–administered surveys
Direction on how to construct effective questionnaires, including considerations of layout
The effects of sponsorship on the response rates of surveys
Use of capabilities provided by newly mass–used media: interactivity, presentation of aural and visual stimuli.
The Fourth Edition reintroduces the telephone including coordinating land and mobile."

Applied Ergonomics - vol. 45 n° 4 -

"Musculoskeletal pain is commonly reported by police officers. A potential cause of officer discomfort is a mismatch between vehicle seats and the method used for carrying appointments. Twenty-five police officers rated their discomfort while seated in: (1) a standard police vehicle seat, and (2) a vehicle seat custom-designed for police use. Discomfort was recorded in both seats while wearing police appointments on: (1) a traditional appointments belt, and (2) a load-bearing vest/belt combination (LBV). Sitting in the standard vehicle seat and carrying appointments on a traditional appointments belt were both associated with significantly elevated discomfort. Four vehicle seat features were most implicated as contributing to discomfort: back rest bolster prominence; lumbar region support; seat cushion width; and seat cushion bolster depth. Authorising the carriage of appointments using a LBV is a lower cost solution with potential to reduce officer discomfort. Furthermore, the introduction of custom-designed vehicle seats should be considered."

"IntroductionBack problems are a major occupational health issue for prehospital emergency care professionals. The goals of this article are to: 1) provide descriptive data about the prevalence and the severity of lower back and upper back disorders in EMTs and paramedics; 2) identify some individual and collective strategies used by EMTs and paramedics to protect their health as they perform prehospital emergency missions; 3) assess the possible effectiveness of strategies in preventing back problems by exploring associations between the use of strategies and the presence and severity of symptoms.Material and methodsThe method includes a questionnaire survey (sample n = 334; paramedics and emergency medical technicians) and ergonomics work practice analysis involving shadowing ambulance crews in 12 medical emergency services (over 400 h).ResultsA majority of ambulance professionals had experienced back pain in the twelve-month period before the survey. Work practice analysis revealed strategies and tricks of the trade used by ambulance professionals to reduce the chances of back strain while working. Multiple regression analyses showed that self-reported use of such strategies was associated with fewer back symptoms.ConclusionsPreventive strategies should be integrated into specialised training programs for prehospital medical emergency professionals. This approach could also be used in other work settings."
