"There were more than a million deaths from cancer in the European Union in 2006. A significant percentage of these deaths were caused by workers being exposed to carcinogens at the workplace. These include asbestos, of course, but also an endless number of toxic petrochemical substances or dust that can prove deadly after years of exposure, for example, hard wood dust.

These tens of thousands of deaths every year are not inevitable. They could be avoided, sometimes quite easily, if employers agreed to replace carcinogens with non-toxic or less toxic substances or if they enforced elementary prevention measures.

The aim of this publication is to present the main challenges of combating occupational cancers. It attempts to draw the conclusions of the major health tragedies of the past to contribute to the development of a strategy, notably for trade unions, to combat occupational cancers. "

"La mission d'information s'attache à mieux cerner la réalité complexe de l'épuisement professionnel, communément appelé « burn out », dans une société qui a connu de profondes mutations. Son rapport est ordonné en six grands chapitres. Le premier chapitre vise à délimiter le champ de l'épuisement professionnel qui, à ce stade, est un syndrome et non une maladie. Le deuxième chapitre affirme la réalité du syndrome d'épuisement professionnel dans le monde du travail en revenant sur les chiffrages disponibles. Le troisième chapitre constate que les réponses à la réalité du syndrome d'épuisement professionnel sont à tout le moins insuffisantes, voire inadéquates. Dans le quatrième chapitre, la mission estime qu'il faut être capable de reconnaître la réalité du syndrome d'épuisement professionnel avant d'envisager la réparation de ses effets. Dans les chapitres V et VI, elle aborde la question de l'inscription du burn out dans un tableau de maladie professionnelle, avant de terminer sur son coût économique et social."

"COVID-19 is considered an occupational disease (OD), when infection occurs at the workplace for health workers (HW). Because of the increased infection risk of these workers, they were deemed to be a priority group when the vaccination campaign started in Germany in December 2020. By December 2021, more than 90% of HW had been vaccinated twice. We studied the number and the time trend concerning the severity of OD claims related to COVID-19. Workers' compensation claims for OD are recorded in a standardized database of the Statutory Accident Insurance and Prevention in the Health and Welfare Services (BGW). We analyzed all notifiable COVID-19 related claims filed between 1 March 2020 and 30 September 2022. The proportion of severe cases was estimated by inpatient stays, injury benefit payments, rehabilitation measures, and deaths. The data analysis was descriptive. Due to COVID-19, 317,403 notifiable cases were reported to the BGW. Of these, 200,505 (63.2%) had thus far been recognized as OD. The number of notifiable cases was highest in 2022 and lowest in 2020. In total, 3289 insured individuals were admitted to rehabilitation management. This represented 1.6% of all recognized ODs due to COVID-19 at the BGW. The proportion of cases admitted to rehabilitation management decreased from 4.5% of all recognized ODs in 2020 to 3.2% in 2021 and to 0.1% of all recognized cases in 2022. For inpatient stays, injury benefit payment, and death, a similar trend was observed. Therefore, it might be concluded that the successful vaccination campaign mitigated the negative health effects of COVID-19 on HW. Even with vaccination, severe cases can occur. Therefore, infection prevention at the workplace remains paramount."

"La reconnaissance des maladies professionnelles donne lieu, en France, à une procédure - administrative et souvent judiciaire - complexe et longue que les employeurs savent utiliser pour échapper aux incidences financières de la prise en charge. Le contentieux dit de l'inopposabilité, ici analysé, met en évidence le caractère inadapté du dispositif juridique quand la lésion prend la forme d'un cancer, en raison d'une part du délai qui sépare les expositions et la survenance de la maladie, d'autre part des trajectoires professionnelles morcelées. Ce contentieux, qui tend à mettre à l'écart les salariés, interroge le lien voulu par le législateur français entre réparation et prévention. Il invite à réfléchir sur l'étendue de l'irresponsabilité construite par le législateur français au profit des employeurs et appelle une réforme."
