"The Maternity Leave Directive (92/85/EEC) is concerned with improvements in the safety and health at work of women who are pregnant, have recently given birth or who are breastfeeding. This report finds that nearly all Member States comply with the directive's provision of granting at least two weeks' mandatory maternity leave before and/or after childbirth; a majority exceed this requirement. And in the majority of Member States, replacement rates stand at 100% of the former salary – at least for a certain period of time. Asked by the Committee on Women's Rights and Gender Equality of the European Parliament (FEMM) to conduct a study on national regulations regarding maternity leave against the background of the possible revision of the directive, Eurofound drew upon recent information provided by its Network of European correspondents to produce the report."

"Free movement of persons would not be possible without the guarantee that citizens do not lose their social security protection when moving to another country in Europe. The common rules to coordinate the different national systems of social security cover anyone who moves to another country to settle permanently, work temporarily or study, and even those who are travelling to take a holiday.

This statistical report provides an overview and evaluation of the current data collection and reporting on the EU coordination of social security systems. It draws conclusions and identifies trends by area of social security."

"With the aim of contributing to the ongoing policy dialogue between the European Commission, Member States and (potential) candidate countries, the European Commission asked the 35 country teams of the European Social Policy Network (ESPN) to look at how the eligibility conditions and benefit entitlements of social protection influence the capacity of young people to access the schemes and to highlight the main gaps and obstacles faced by young people in accessing these schemes.

This Synthesis Report provides a factual overview of the access for young people to social protection schemes for five categories of cash benefits in the ESPN countries, including an overview of the main gaps/obstacles:

unemployment benefits
maternity/paternity/parental benefits
sickness and healthcare benefits
Guaranteed Minimum Income (GMI) benefits
housing benefits"

" In this article the issue of coordination of parental benefits in cross-border situations, with the Swedish example in focus, is analysed. There are no specific provisions in the Coordination Regulations concerning these benefits. At the national level, parental benefits can be a mix between individual, income-related benefits (similar to maternity/paternity benefits) and family-oriented, residence-based family benefits. The classification of a benefit is of importance in solving issues like aggregation of insurance periods, exportability and the overlapping of benefits, and the result may differ depending on which classification is made. The situation of the family members may also be affected. Sweden has had particular problems relating to the coordination of parental benefits, which can be partly explained by the fact that Swedish parental benefit has been classified as a family benefit for the purposes of the Coordination Regulations. The problems of coordination have been raised in cases referred to the CJEU and in recent developments in national law. The Swedish example is also used in this article to raise some general questions in the area of maternity/paternity benefits and family benefits."
