"The emergence of global framework agreements (GFAs) is a central element in labour's response to the globalization of production in the operations of multinational enterprises (MNEs) through supply chains. This article analyses the content of the 54 most recent GFAs and evaluates 25 case studies on GFA implementation to identify examples of good practice to promote decent work in supply chains by developing labour relations on a global scale. Apart from constant growth in the number of GFAs since the beginning of the century, there is a qualitative evolution: GFAs are increasingly building on international instruments and principles. Moreover, references to the supply chain are becoming more frequent and compulsory. The case studies reveal several examples of good practices in bringing suppliers, subcontractors and subsidiaries under the GFA umbrella. However, local suppliers and trade unions are often unaware of GFAs. In the next generation of GFAs it is important to further improve the quality of the agreements and to develop social dialogue at the global level which is more strongly embedded in local realities. Looking to the future, the involvement of local trade unions throughout the GFA process needs to be strengthened."

Transfer. European Review of Labour and Research

"About 10 per cent of all global framework agreements include a reference to mediation or arbitration procedures. Therefore in 2016 the 105th International Labour Conference commissioned the ILO to assist global union federations and multinational companies in mediation and dispute settlement where appropriate. However, in the existing literature alternative dispute resolution constitutes uncharted territory when discussing mechanisms to strengthen compliance with global framework agreements. This article starts to fill this void, presenting six reasons for the growing necessity to start developing a procedural framework for alternative dispute resolution in global framework agreements. Most importantly, increasingly technical agreements can no longer be enforced through reputational sanctions, while their increasing ‘juridification' aggravates the risk of external legal disputes. However, most multinational companies and global union federations do not have procedures for alternative dispute resolution and without a comprehensive procedural framework references to mediation or arbitration are unlikely to lead to the resolution of any dispute. "

"This study provides empirical evidence from different regions of the world to identify avenues for platform economy workers to access freedom of association and collective bargaining. It shows that collective protests, the establishment of new organizations of workers and platforms, social dialogue and, to a limited extent, collective bargaining are taking place in the platform economy. The experiences from the ground described in this study indicate ways and a demand to create an even more enabling environment for freedom of association and collective bargaining in order to realize the opportunities of the platform economy for workers and employers."
