EPC

"There has been a lot of attention on the current transition of power taking place in Brussels. The new EU leadership will be confronted with a number of internal and external challenges. They will have deal with economic stagnation, the negative effects of fragmentation and the need to increase the Union's legitimacy. There is no better moment to take stock of the ‘state of the Union' and to look ahead into the next European political cycle (2014-2019), focusing not on personalities but on content: what challenges do we face and what should the EU focus on in the coming years? These new beginnings will encounter new challenges, and who better understands the issues than some of the key players in European politics. Challenge Europe brings these players together and explores what social, political and economic challenges are facing Europe, and its' citizens."

EPC

"Published within the framework of the ‘Well-being 2030' project, co-financed by the European Commission, this new issue of Challenge Europe addresses the question of how to turn social policy into an effective productive factor, enabling well-being of Europeans and economic growth. Based on the argument that social policy can contribute to long-term sustainable growth, this multi-author publication focuses on those policies which can potentially bring the most added value to citizens' life, and includes contributions from high-level policy-makers, academics, business representatives and experts about the future of social policy in Europe. While the first chapter explores the possible synergies between growth, well-being and social policy, the second part of this EPC's policy journal turns to those policy areas where intervention can be the most effective. Finally, in a third chapter, the authors look at the EU's room of manoeuvre and propose specific policy actions."

FEPS

"2024 was announced as a ‘super election' year. In fact, about half of the world's population in 72 countries, from the United States to the European Union and further to India, went to the polls to elect new parliaments or presidents. This outstanding celebration of democracy, however, resulted in the advancement of reactionary or even extremist forces in many of the countries involved. Hence, for Progressives, the world being shaped is one that requires, more than ever, deep reflection on the reasons for the electoral shortcomings, a drive to innovate and cope with this changing political landscape, and the will to keep fighting for our values and ideals.

In this sixth edition of the Progressive Yearbook, FEPS offers analyses of the electoral results in the EU and the US, as well as of some of the political developments in the European continent and beyond, in particular on the war fronts in the European neighbourhood, Ukraine and the Middle East. We focus on divisive issues such as the common agricultural policy and migration. We look at how the new Labour government in the UK will impact the relations with the EU and at the state of social democratic forces in two EU member states: Croatia and Germany.

Finally, we will try to understand, based on current trends, what the near future holds for European Progressives and the EU's integration project.

With the mission of looking back to look ahead, the Progressive Yearbook focuses on transversal European issues that have left a mark on the previous year, and brings forward-looking analyses of the key political developments of the year ahead. It symbolises FEPS' readiness to put these issues into perspective."

Intereconomics. Review of European Economic Policy

"Positive GDP growth is important, but how much GDP growth we need and how the growth of income should be distributed are equally important questions. This explains why (for reasons of distribution and environmental sustainability) a movement has developed over the last ten years to go "beyond GDP". Progress has been made in measuring the social and environmental impact of growth, which has helped in the development of EU objectives like achieving smart, sustainable and inclusive growth."

"The divergences developed between core and periphery within the euro area represent the main threat to the existence of the single currency and to the cohesion and stability of the EU as a whole. Without proper automatic stabilizers, a monetary union can only deliver suboptimal results, and may not even be sustainable."

Intereconomics. Review of European Economic Policy

"With disparities in national unemployment rates reaching record levels, the debate on fiscal stabilisers in Europe has gained new momentum. Can a European unemployment insurance scheme help to absorb asymmetric shocks and bring about the desired level of macroeconomic stabilisation? What should such an unemployment benefit system look like? The contributions to this Forum explore the benefits expected from a European unemployment insurance scheme and discuss the difficulties in establishing such a policy."

Transfer. European Review of Labour and Research

"In 2004 the European Union will be enlarged to include ten new Member States, eight of them from the former Soviet bloc. These countries have made outstanding progress in terms of macroeconomic development in recent years, but there remain a number of specific problems which raise doubts as to the future monetary integration of these countries. Hungary is a case in point that illustrates both the achievements and the difficulties of the transition process. In July 2003 the Hungarian government and the National Bank of Hungary (NBH) announced in a joint declaration that Hungary would introduce the euro as national currency on 1 January 2008. The political elite, the policy-makers and the wider public take for granted the benefits of replacing the forint with the euro, while repeated turbulence on the financial markets highlights the fragility of convergence and currency reform. This article discusses various aspects of this unusual period of monetary history. "
