"This article examines the process of privatization as it has affected Hungary since 1990 and how it has affected the environment. More than 1,100 Hungarian companies have completely privatized; the state retains a majority interest in 116 others. Hungary's process has been quick, heterogeneous, and often debated. Now, 80 percent of the GDP is privately produced and privatization has helped to stabilize and modernize the economy. Strengthening the expectations of consumers, trade partners, and employees reinforces company environmental policies. Those that take seriously market demand for environmental measures remain most competitive. The higher the privatization requirements, the higher the environmental standards."
