"The process of democratisation of eastern European countries has been the recent focus of attention for a number of political scientists. Among the various authors writing on the issue of democratic transition in post-communist Europe, very few have concentrated on the processes of democratic transition and consolidation in former Yugoslavia. Out of the few authors who have analysed the question of the democratic transformation of the countries that came into existence with the dissolution of second Yugoslavia, few have attempted to correlate this process with the inter-republican discussions about the future status of Yugoslavia. Therefore, this article seeks, first of all, to explain the distinct democratic transition of Slovenia and Macedonia and secondly, to show the importance of the responses of the elite to the questions and issues raised at the federal level concerning the status of second Yugoslavia. Therefore, it will underline the importance for the process of democratisation in Macedonia and Slovenia of the transformation of the elite."
