"In this article the authors tries to comment on the most salient features of organised crime, both generally and within the eastern European context, in order to pinpoint those elements of social organisation in the transitional eastern European societies that are most conducive to high levels of crime, especially to the flourishing of organised crime. These elements, then, are exactly those that need to be amended with a view to reducing both the general crime rate, and the occurrence and growth of organised crime as an alternative to legitimate societal income-generation systems."
