"The Treaty provisions on state aid control should ensure a level playing field within Member States and the functioning of the internal market. To achieve this objective, rules regarding compatibility of state aid must be aligned with the priorities of the EU policies concerned. The review of the Guidelines for State Aid for Environmental Protection and Energy is perfectly timed with the new Industrial Strategy for a Globally Competitive, Green, and Digital Europe. It is an opportunity to address shortcomings of the current guidelines to design an effective instrument which is coherent with the Union's policies for energy and the environment.
