"Sport and socialism originated in the industrial revolution, which from the mid-19th century onwards has dramatically altered our society. Both phenomena appear to have little in common. At first sport appealed to upper-class gentlemen only, but as the labour movement started being successful in reducing working time, doing and watching sports proved immensely popular with the working class and sport was consequently used as a recruitment and propaganda tool. ..."
