"The Nordic countries have long been considered a paradise for trade unions, which was reflected in high membership numbers. Since the late 1990s, however, Nordic unions have been confronted with substantial membership losses. While this is partly due to structural changes, policy reforms by the political right have significantly exacerbated this trend in Sweden and Denmark. The main point of attack was the unemployment insurance system administered by the unions, the so-called Ghent system, which has traditionally been an important recruitment tool for labour unions in both Scandinavian countries...."
