"Over the past decade, the use of information technology (IT) by American unions to enhance organizing initiatives has been slow and uneven. At the national and international level, the use of the Internet has largely taken the form of one-dimensional websites, few of which are updated daily. Even fewer of these parent-union sites offer the opportunity for interactivity in their designs. A review of many local union websites reveals a more promising landscape; however, the question of why national or international unions have not better utilized this technology remains largely unstudied. This article describes several ways in which the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE), American Federation of Labor– Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL–CIO) is experimenting with a number of interactive cyberstrategies such as: micromessaging, deployable websites using handheld computers, and "blogging.""
