"This booklet is intended as a guide to the system set up to prevent barriers to the free movement of products, created through the adoption of national technical standards and regulations. It provides a commentary on the most recent version of Directive 83/189/EEC, the legislation adopted to implement the system. It covers the amendments subsequently introduced in 1988 by Directive 88/182/EEC and in 1994 by Directive 94/10/EC, which has been in force since 1 July 1995. Each of the directive's provisions is quoted in full and accompanied by a detailed commentary explaining its meaning and its implications for all interested parties: Member States, national and European standardisation bodies and, last but not least, present or potential economic operators within the European Union."
