"This quarterly review combines information on recent labour market trends with a thematic focus on the adequacy of unemployment benefit systems in the EU and their importance in the light of the COVID-19 crisis.
The report shows that the health crisis and the necessary containment measures adopted to fight the pandemic have taken a toll on the EU economy. In the first quarter of 2020, employment in Europe declined after almost seven years of continuous growth. Even though short-time work schemes have slowed down significantly the reduction in employment, the Commission predicts a 4.4% decline of total employment in 2020. Unemployment rose to 14.1 million unemployed people in the EU and 11.9 million in the euro area in April 2020."
