"The targets and expressions of racism vary across Europe. This article discusses therelevance of different descriptions and analyses of racism. It considers the variousterms used in different countries such as ‘ethnic minority', ‘foreigner' or ‘black' toidentify people considered as ‘others' because of their ‘race' or ethnicity and the significanceof differences in terminology. The article shows the importance of a crossnationalEuropean perspective on racism. There are important convergences acrossEuropean countries in the discourses and practices of racism, particularly the distinctionbetween ‘useful' and ‘abusive' migrants. A cross-European perspective canbe an important inspiration for anti-racist struggles."
