"Nearly 80 per cent of all professors in the Nordic region are men. Gender balance in academia is therefore an important research policy issue. Hitherto it has been scarcely debated on a joint Nordic level. This report shows the status and the development in the field. The report gives examples of successful practices and highlights research policy challenges that are important to analyse in a gender and equality perspective.

Given the lack of comparative investigations and research on the gender balance in academia in the Nordic region, there is a need to develop Nordic cooperation in this field. The report concludes with a number of recommendations in order to consolidate the issue of gender balance in academia as a joint policy- and research field in the Nordic region."

"Nanomedicine, the application of nanotechnology in healthcare, offers numerous very promising possibilities to significantly improve medical diagnosis and therapy, leading to an affordable higher quality of life for everyone. At the same time nanomedicine is a strategic issue for the sustainable competitiveness of Europe.
In order to avoid that this young and very fast growing discipline suffers from fragmentation and a lack of coordination, industry and academia – together with the European Commission – have identified the need for a European initiative to intermesh the several strands of nanomedicine into a firm strategy for advancement.
The resulting “European Technology Platform on NanoMedicine” is an industry-led consortium, bringing together the key European stakeholders in the sector. In September 2005 it delivered a common vision of this technologically and structurally multi-faceted area 1, and defines the most important objectives in this Strategic Research Agenda (SRA).
The SRA addresses the Member States of the European Union, its Candidate Countries and Associated States to the EU Framework Programmes for research and tech no lo gi cal development, as well as the European Commission itself. Its main aim is to put forward a sound basis for decision making processes for policy makers and funding agencies, providing an overview of needs and challenges, existing technologies and future opportunities in nanomedicine. The SRA also takes into consideration education and training, ethical requirements, benefit/risk assessment, public acceptance, regulatory framework and intellectual property issues, thus representing a possible reference document for regulatory bodies. ..."

"The report presents the first cycle results of the application of the open method of coordination by CREST (Scientific and Technical Research Committee) to policies aimed at reaching the 3% research investment objective. The report is based on work that took place between November 2003 and October 2004 in the various policy areas of the 3% Action Plan where competence lies primarily at Member State level. The outcomes of the first cycle (exchange of information between Member States, mutual learning, identification of good practices and formulation of recommendations) constitute a valuable basis for the further development of Member States policies, taking into account their specific national contexts and priorities."

"Objective
In this discussion paper, we close our 2024 series reflecting on the successes, failures, and promises of occupational health and safety research in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Scandinavian Journal of Work, Environment & Health (SJWEH). This paper aims to elaborate on the future of our research field.
Methods
We conducted a narrative review of lessons learned in the series, examining insights gained and key takeaways. Additionally, we explored the current and anticipated agendas of major institutions, including the World Health Organization and the European Union, on occupational health and safety, as well as potential developments in the academic publishing industry.
Results
Occupational health and safety research has significantly evolved over the last 50 years, emphasizing longitudinal study designs, enriching observational data with registry-based information, and expanding the scope of hazardous determinants impacting workers` health. Novel statistical approaches have further enabled researchers to address complex associations, such as mediation effects, and to strengthen causal inference in observational studies. At the same time, the publishing business is changing rapidly, with artificial intelligence poised to reshape both research practices and the landscape of academic publishing.
Conclusion
In the changing landscape of research and academic publishing, our goal is for SJWEH to continue to be a leading source of high-quality research dedicated to protecting and improving workers' health. We are curious and excited to see where all these current and anticipated changes will lead in the years to come."

"Addressing workplace health involves a multidimensional approach in which gender plays a critical role, affecting employees differently due to anatomic differences, gender roles, societal expectations, occupational patterns and social and legal norms. Addressing workplace health with a gender-sensitive approach ensures that all individuals are supported in achieving optimal health and well-being at work. To achieve this goal, we call for papers to discuss the complex connections of sex and gender with workplace health and management. We envision healthy workplaces as those in which job design, daily performance and general management incorporate a critical gender perspective in the understanding of organisational dynamics and behaviour, including but not limited to the research areas described below..."
