"This study, which analyses the key labour market determinants of migration flows from selected Arab Mediterranean Countries (Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Syria, Tunisia and the Occupied Palestinian Territories) finds that employment in AMCs is a major challenge for the region – and for Europe – in the next 10 to 15 years. Immdiate action is needed because the status quo risks causing permanent damage to the development prospects of those countries. The AMCs' public policies are currently ill equipped to face the challenge. Labour migration remains a key feature of the labour markets in these countries – yet cannot by itself solve the labour market challenges there.

The study makes a number of recommendations including: upgrading the statistics available and conducting further in-depth analysis; upgrading education and training systems; mainstreaming the policy goal of job creation and higher productivity; promoting active labour market policies; creating incentives to hire new graduates and women; creating incentives to transform informal into formal employment; and establishing social protection systems guaranteeing universal coverage, with the emphasis on woker rather than job protection. It also recommends that the EU upgrade its existing framework for AMC migration not only as a unilateral strategy, but as a cooperative framework for true co-development."

"Networks of Outrage and Hope is an exploration of the new forms of social movements and protests that are erupting in the world today, from the Arab uprisings to the indignadas movement in Spain, from the Occupy Wall Street movement to the social protests in Turkey, Brazil and elsewhere. While these and similar social movements differ in many important ways, there is one thing they share in common: they are all interwoven inextricably with the creation of autonomous communication networks supported by the Internet and wireless communication.

In this new edition of his timely and important book, Manuel Castells examines the social, cultural and political roots of these new social movements, studies their innovative forms of self–organization, assesses the precise role of technology in the dynamics of the movements, suggests the reasons for the support they have found in large segments of society, and probes their capacity to induce political change by influencing people s minds. Two new chapters bring the analysis up–to–date and draw out the implications of these social movements and protests for understanding the new forms of social change and political democracy in the global network society."

"The Eighth Edition of this market-leading text offers the most current and respected introduction to comparative politics available, with several updated country studies and a robust Web site. As in the previous editions, theoretical chapters (Chs. 1 - 7) at the beginning of the book explore the “purpose of government” and provide students with a framework for understanding comparative politics. The theoretical section is followed by 12 individual country studies, written by experts in the politics of those nations."

Working USA. The Journal of Labor and Society - vol. 14 n° 3 -

Working USA. The Journal of Labor and Society

"In what became known as the Egyptian Revolution, the country experienced sustained, widespread demonstrations to oust President Mubarak and the ruling of National Democratic Party. In post-Mubarak Egypt, Egyptians are attempting to reform radically their country. Decades of emergency laws, fraudulent elections, deprivation of the most basic of freedoms, and dire poverty have, in the absence of the right of workers to form independent trade unions and collectively bargain, caused industrial strife in Egypt. The essay contends that workers must have political space to express grievances and the ability to organize themselves, or instability in Egypt will persist and expand. Egyptian history has demonstrated that limits on the fundamental labor right to form a union have had adverse effects for the governing Egyptian elite and the country's stability. Therefore, as Egypt undertakes serious reform in government and in the law, the new Egyptian leaders must undertake trade union law reform enabling workers to form independent trade unions outside of government-administered institutions. A new trade union law that allows and encourages the creation of independent trade unions will help plant the seeds of democracy at the grassroots level and grant Egyptian workers a nondisruptive means to address their working conditions and to improve their families' livelihoods, thus paving the way to a more democratic Egyptian society."

Lung Cancer - vol. 49 n° Supplement 1 -

Lung Cancer

"Asbestos has been recognized in Egypt since a long time as ancient Egyptians were using it in mummification. Mesothelioma in Egypt is mainly attributed to environmental origin with a high incidence of women and young adults affected. The incidence of mesothelioma is rising in Egypt. Epidemiological data for 635 malignant mesothelioma (MM) patients over 4 years in the third Millennium were collected from the National Cancer Institute (NCI), Cairo University and Abbassia Chest hospital. This number is more than four times the number diagnosed in the previous 11 years at NCI. A clinicopathological study was done for 100 malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) patients and showed that asbestos exposure and SV40 positivity were evident in 67% and 60% of cases, respectively. The median survival was 14.3 months and the 1 and 2 year survival rates were 60% and 27%, respectively. Evaluation of p53 and pRb immunohistochemically showed that pRb alteration was related to poor survival. Other biological prognostic factors such as EGFR, HER-2, glutathione S transferase (GST) and MDR were evaluated in 50 cases. Overexpression of EGFR was correlated with lack of clinical benefit and poor survival. GST potentiated the effect of EGFR on survival. The use of EGFR inhibitors may have a role in the treatment of MM. Asbestos in Cairo is a silent killer and measures toward eliminating it entirely or at least strictly controlling human contact with this dangerous carcinogen have to be taken in order to combat the coming epidemic of mesothelioma in Egypt."

International Journal of Occupational and Environmental Health - vol. 16 n° 2 -

International Journal of Occupational and Environmental Health

"In many parts of the world, children work to help support themselves and their families. There continues to be controversy around the issue of children's work, with the International Labour Organization now distinguishing between harmful work, which should be eliminated, and work that does not affect children's health, personal development or participation in school. Some forms of work are being recognized as playing a positive role in children's lives. Using the case of Egypt, this paper explores issues around children and work with particular emphasis on occupational safety. The PPIC Work project, a CIDA-funded initiative in Egypt, has been developing tools which enable microfinance institutions to intervene in children's workplaces, improving working conditions and learning opportunities."
