To help in the design or redesign of workplaces it would be helpful to know in advance the postural stress consequences of a wide range of body postures. This experiment evaluated 168 postures chosen to represent those in the Ovako Working-posture Analysing System (OWAS) using Rated perceived Exertion (RPE) and Body Part Discomfort (BPD) measures. The postures comprised all combinations of three arm postures, four back postures, seven leg postures and two forces (weights of held boxes).

The prevention of work-related musculoskeletal disorders has become a national priority in many countries. Increasingly, attempts are made to quantify those exposures that increase risk in order to set exposure limit values. This study used commonly employed field measurement methods and tools in order to perform an inter-method comparison between three primary methods of risk factor exposure assessment: self-report questionnaires, observational video analysis and direct measurement. Extreme posture duration, repetition, hand force (estimated from electromyography) and movement velocity were assessed for 18 subjects while performing each of three jobs processing tree seedlings. Results indicated that self-reports were the least precise assessment method, which consistently overestimated exposures for each of the measured risk factors. However, adjustment of the reports as psychophysical scales may increase agreement on a group level. Wrist flexion/extension duration and repetition were best measured by electrogoniometer. Electrogoniometric measures of wrist deviation duration and frequency were less precise than video analysis. Forearm rotation duration and repetition, grip force and velocity appeared to be best quantified by direct measurement as measured by electrogoniometer and electromyography (EMG) (as root-mean-square amplitude). The results highlight the fact that it is as important to consider and report estimated measurement error in order to reduce potential exposure misclassification in epidemiologic studies.

The effects of a downward-tilting (DT) keyboard tray on wrist posture, seated posture and self-assessed musculoskeletal discomfort were investigated in a field experiment. Thirty-eight professional office workers were studied. A pretest assessed how they typed using either a conventional keyboard on a desk or on an articulating keyboard tray, and with or without wrist rests. Workers were randomly allocated to a control (n=15) or test group (n=23) that used their existing keyboard in a DT system. A post-test was conducted 3 weeks later. Results showed no significant changes in wrist posture, seated posture or reports of musculoskeletal discomfort for the control group, and ~ 50% of typing wrist movements put the hand in a neutral zone. There were significant improvements in wrist posture, seated posture and upper body musculoskeletal discomfort for the test group using the DT system. Over 80% of typing wrist movements put the hand into a neutral zone with the DT arrangement. Reactions to using a conventional keyboard on a DT system were positive.

At a VDU workstation professional touch-typing operators worked at eight different combined adjustments of visual target height and chair backrest inclination. Working posture, workers' perceptions and work performance were measured. Two conclusions were drawn. First, in order to minimize the load on the musculoskeletal system for touch-typing VDU operators, the gaze inclination to a visual target (screen, document) should be 6-9° (range 0-15°) below the horizontal and, second, the gaze inclination recommended is independent of sitting posture (that is with the backrest between upright and 15° inclined backwards).

House painters represent a group of construction workers with a high frequency of neck and shoulder complaints and concomitant high risks for early retirements. Shoulder tendinitis, especially supraspinatus tendinitis, occurs frequently among house painters. The tasks of sanding and painting of ceilings with extension handles are particularly strenuous for these body regions. The purpose of this study was to identify work techniques that would be less strenuous to the arms and shoulders during sanding work. A biomechanical model was applied to quantify the shoulder loads during sanding and to determine the likely muscle force distribution. The necessary input data were measured experimentally for the model by means of a load cell and strain gauges on an extension handle, a Kistler™ force plate, and a MacReflex™ motion analysis system. Forty experienced male painters participated in the study. Three different work techniques were identified: the normal technique, the reversed grip and the pushing technique. The pushing technique was characterized by shorter stroke length and lower speed of the grinding block than the other techniques. The painters among the group of subjects who used the pushing technique were found to report fewer shoulder disorders during sanding than the others. The most common shoulder tendinitis is the supraspinatus tendinitis, also among house painters, and using the Pushing technique could possibly prevent from this disorder. However, further research in larger groups of house painters is needed to be able to recommend this technique for a wider use.

This study evaluated spinal loads associated with lifting and hanging heavy mining cable in a variety of postures. This electrical cable can weigh up to 10 kg per metre and is often lifted in restricted spaces in underground coal mines. Seven male subjects performed eight cable lifting and hanging tasks, while trunk kinematic data and trunk muscle electromyograms (EMGs) were obtained. The eight tasks were combinations of four postures (standing, stooping, kneeling on one knee, or kneeling on both knees) and two levels of cable load (0 N or 100 N load added to the existing cable weight). An EMG-assisted model was used to calculate forces and moments acting on the lumbar spine. A two-way split-plot ANOVA showed that increased load (p < 0.05) and changes in lifting posture (p < 0.05) independently affected trunk muscle recruitment and spinal loading. The increase in cable load resulted in higher EMG activity of all trunk muscles and increased axial and lateral bending moments on the spine (p < 0.05). Changes in posture caused more selective adjustments in muscle recruitment and affected the sagittal plane moment (p < 0.05). Despite the more selective nature of trunk EMG changes due to posture, the magnitude of changes in spinal loading was often quite dramatic. However, average compression values exceeded 3400 N for all cable lifting tasks.

Office chairs have often been designed to promote a single 'correct' rather rigid and upright posture, yet it is acknowledged that allowing changes in posture is good ergonomics practice. The present study investigated office worker's preferences for a standard shaped typist's chair (ST) and a prototype multi-posture (PMP) office chair designed to allow its users a variety of sitting positions.The findings suggest that a more aesthetically acceptable PMP chair should be developed, peoples' reasons for preferring a more traditionally designed chair should be explored, and that the effect of postural stability education on personal preconceptions should be examined to obtain an optimal combination of healthy sitting habits, comfort and aesthetic qualities in an office chair.

This technical note details the preliminary stage in the development of a postural analysis tool, "Rapid Entire Body Assessment" (REBA). REBA has been developedto fill a perceived need for a practioner's field tool, specifically designed to be sensitive to the type of unpredictable working postures found in health care and other service industries. A team of ergonomists, physiotherapists and nurses collected and individually coded over 600 postural examples to produce a new tool incorporating dynamic and static postural loading factors, human-load interface, and a new concept of a gravity-assisted upper limb position. Initial reliability for inter-observer coding shows promise but further work is needed to establish the validity of the tool.

"The relation between lipoatrophia semicircularis (LS--band-like circular depressions and isolated atrophy of the subcutaneous fatty tissue on the anterior thighs and sitting posture or pressure on the seat surface of office chairs was investigated in an office environment. A questionnaire was presented to 21 subjects and electromyographic measurements, video analysis and pressure measurements were performed. Remarkable posture differences between the LS group and the group without LS were found: less use of the lumbar support of the chair, static sitting postures and a too high seat surface of the office chair were characteristics of the subjects with LS. These observations were confirmed by higher pressure measurements for the subjects with LS. In addition, highly significant pressure differences were found between different chairs."
