"This book explains the contrasting strategies and their electoral fortunes of social democratic parties in the major European democracies in the 1970s and 1980s. Going beyond approaches that focus on the influence of class structure and political economic institutions, The Transformation of European Social Democracy analyses the party's competitive situation in the electoral arena, the constraints and opportunities of party organisation, and the role of ideological legacies to explain the strategic choices social democratic parties have made and the electoral results they have achieved. Far from being doomed to decline, social democracy's success depends on its ability to transform its political message and to construct new electoral coalitions."

"Beyond Social Democracy examines the electoral decline of social democratic parties and how distinctive strategic moves might enable them to salvage different segments of their former electoral coalitions. Social democratic decline, however, does not imply the demise of basic tenets of the parties' programmatic appeals. Under the impact of novel twenty-first-century political-economic challenges, these concerns are also invoked and repackaged with new ideas by novel left parties. Empirically, voter movements show that social democratic parties incur net losses mostly to these other leftist parties, while sustaining a balanced, but voluminous exchange with center-right parties. Contrary to commonly held preconceptions, there is little net loss to the new extreme Right. These findings will be pertinent to anyone interested in understanding or devising party strategies in twenty-first-century democracies. "

Herman Buyssens (Van Goethem Advocaten) deed een gelijkaardige oefening, maar concentreerde zich hierbij voornamelijk op de procedurele aspecten. De knelpunten worden geïnventariseerd, becommentarieerd en zo nodig worden haalbare oplossingen gesuggereerd.
In een tweede – meer theoretisch – luik van het boek wordt nagedacht over de sociale dialoog. Filip Dorssemont (Universiteit Utrecht en K.U.Leuven) staat stil bij de informatie en raadpleging van werknemers in kleine en middelgrote ondernemingen.
Inger De Wilde (Universiteit Gent) bespreekt de wijze waarop in Nederland het sociaal overleg in de publieke sector is gestructureerd en vraagt zich af of we dit poldermodel kunnen overnemen. Tot slot werkt Patrick Humblet (Universiteit Gent) een scenario uit voor een nieuwe Bedrijfsorganisatiewet."

Fortunately, the ethos of the anti-communist revolutions of 1989 and 1990, the natural self-organization of civil society and the international context made a return to totalitarianism impossible.
