Labour. Review of Labour Economics and Industrial Relations

"This study analyses gender differences in the intergenerational earnings mobility of second-generation migrants in Germany. Thereby it takes into account the influence of assortative mating and the parental integration. First, intergenerational earnings elasticities are estimated at the mean and along the earnings distribution. The results do not reveal large differences in the mobility — neither between natives and migrants nor between men and women. Second, intergenerational changes in the relative earnings position are analysed. These results confirm that migrants are mostly as (im)mobile as the native population."

Journal of Public Health Policy

"Background: We compare disparities in health status between first-generation immigrants and others in the United States (US) and Canada. Methods: We used data from the Joint Canada–US Survey of Health. The regression models adjusted for demographics, socioeconomic status, and health insurance (the US). Results: In both countries, the health advantage belonged to immigrants. Fewer disparities between immigrants and those native-born were seen in Canada versus the US. Canadians of every immigrant/race group fared better than US native-born Whites. Discussion: Fewer disparities in Canada and better overall health of all Canadians suggest that societal context may create differences in access to the resources, environments, and experiences that shape health and health behaviors."

European Journal of Social Security - vol. 15 n° 2 -

European Journal of Social Security

"This article analyses possible legal bases for the establishment of extra-territorial socio-economic human rights obligations on the part of wealthier European ‘Destination Countries' vis-à-vis poor migrants. In particular, it considers whether obligations of international cooperation and assistance under the International Covenant on Economic Social and Cultural Rights (ICESCR) might provide a basis for addressing socio-economic deprivation in Countries of Origin and lead to the provision of social assistance. The article also analyses the socio-economic case-law under Article 3 of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) in respect of expulsion of migrants (e.g. MSS v Belgium and Greece, Sufi and Elmiv the UK, and SHH v the UK). The analysis of these documents supports the claim that wealthy states can attract responsibilities for providing protection against living in poverty for persons in other countries. At the same time, although language and semantics relating to extraterritorial socio-economic protection are converging under the ICESCR and ECHR, there are a number of pertinent questions that remain in the sphere of concrete burden sharing. These relate primarily to the allocation to wealthy European states of concrete burdens of responsibility for the elimination/prevention of poverty in other countries and raise the question of how far the responsibility stretches."

"Are EU Member States facing similar challenges when it comes to the integration of third country nationals? What can the EU do to improve the integration of migrants in its societies? Is the European Integration Fund (EIF) a good instrument to promote integration in EU Member States?

FutureLab Europe investigated the practice of the European Integration Fund (EIF), surveying migrants who benefited from EIF-funded programmes and interviewing NGOs whose budget is financed by the EIF. The FutureLab Europe 2015 publication assesses the integration of migrants in the EU by investigating the practice of the EIF in four EU member states: Finland, Germany, Romania, and Spain, virtually covering Northern, Continental, Eastern and Southern Europe. The study was the result of a qualitative research based on the findings that emerged from 10 interviews with NGOs based in the case study countries and co-financed by the EIF, and a questionnaire filled out by 125 migrants who took part in EIF-funded programmes. The aforementioned methodology was chosen to create a bridge between the people on the ground and EU policy makers, giving a voice to the people directly involved in EU-funded programmes as well as to the migrants themselves."
