"This report analyses China's ambitious plan to build one of the world's most advanced and competitive economies with the help of innovative manufacturing technologies (“smart manufacturing”). China's industrial masterplan “Made in China 2025” aims to turn the country into a “manufacturing superpower” over the coming decades. This industrial policy will challenge the economic primacy of the current leading economies and international corporations. The strategy targets virtually all high-tech industries that strongly contribute to economic growth in advanced economies: automotive, aviation, machinery, robotics, high-tech maritime and railway equipment, energy-saving vehicles, medical devices and information technology to name only a few. Countries in which these high-tech industries contribute a large share of economic growth are most vulnerable to China's plans (see graphic below). This report examines the repercussions of Made in China 2025 focusing specifically on smart manufacturing. The promotion and dissemination of smart manufacturing technology is the centrepiece of the strategy, borrowing from the German concept of Industry 4.0 and the Industrial Internet formulated in the United States. By energetically upgrading the mostly backward industrial processes of China's manufacturing sector, the Chinese government hopes to enhance the competitiveness of its enterprises on domestic markets and to propel their global expansion. "

Oxford Review of Economic Policy - vol. 31 n° 2 -

Oxford Review of Economic Policy

"This paper considers developments in UK growth performance and supply-side policies since the 1980s. It argues that economic reforms made in the Thatcher years and consolidated under subsequent governments delivered improved pre-crisis growth outcomes helped by the information and communications technology (ICT) revolution and stronger competition in product markets. The new growth economics provided useful insights for policy-makers, some of which were partly heeded. Recently, as productivity growth has stalled, there has been a turn to ‘soft' industrial policy and a fear that the future is one of secular stagnation. The former has made little difference and the latter is unlikely."

Safety Science - vol. 74

Safety Science

"When an organisation changes, grows, or new units join into a corporation, it generates challenges for health and safety (HS) management. There are different types of HS tools, systems, applications, forms and software which support HS management. The purpose of this research is to find out what kind of HS management practices and tools are used and what is required to manage HS efficiently within a global steel company's (Nemployees = 15.000) different sites. All the sites (N = 6) had a health and safety management system, which was based on OHSAS 18001 requirements. Local HS management practices and tools varied significantly, but had similar backgrounds. Corporate HS management was based around HS standards, vision and principles, plans and targets. Similarly, it also followed OHSAS requirements. Some improvement needs have been identified for both the local and the corporate level HS management practices and tools. It is possible to manage HS in a continuously changing organisation. The foundations should be based on corporate HS standards, which should be outlined clearly – based on the desired end result complying with the external requirements."

"The second half of the twentieth century witnessed the worldwide (re)emergence of the non-factory forms of industrial labor. Academic studies predominantly emphasize the economic and political globalization to explain this phenomenon. This thesis investigates the local urban dynamics of this `proliferation of the industrial labor practices' with a field research in Istanbul, Turkey."
