"As in the two previous editions of Think Global – Act European (TGAE), coordinated by Notre Europe, this report focuses on the medium-term, covering the Polish, Danish and Cypriot Trio Presidency, which will run from July 2011 to December 2012.

Such a focus allows for an in-depth analysis of the Trio's role, both front-stage and back-stage, as it develops in the context of the Lisbon Treaty's implementation. Accordingly, the authors of this report, coming from 16 European think tanks, take stock of the initiatives adopted during the past Trio Presidency, identify emerging challenges and formulate concrete short- to medium-term proposals aiming for rapid policy-progress.

Overall, the 18-month time frame to which each new edition of TGAE is devoted produces, from one report to the next, a comprehensive chronological picture of the EU's development."

"Sustainable development is a fundamental and overarching objective of the European Union, enshrined in the Treaty. The EU Sustainable Development Strategy (EU SDS) brings together the many strands of economic, social and environmental policy under one overarching objective — to continually improve the quality of life and well-being for present and future generations. The Eurostat monitoring report, based on the EU set of sustainable development indicators and published every two years, provides an objective, statistical picture of progress towards the goals and objectives of the EU SDS. This ‘lite' version of the 2015 monitoring report makes use of the universal language of visuals, offering a shortcut to the essence of the messages delivered through the full version of the monitoring report. It thus provides a snapshot of the key trends related to sustainable development in the European Union."

"The 2016 edition of 'Smarter, greener, more inclusive? — Indicators to support the Europe 2020 strategy' supports the Europe 2020 strategy by monitoring progress towards the targets and goals defined under the three mutually reinforcing priorities of smart, sustainable and inclusive growth.

The analysis is based on the Europe 2020 headline indicators chosen to monitor progress towards the strategy's targets. Other indicators focusing on specific subgroups of society or on related contextual issues are also used to deepen the analysis and present a broader picture. The publication presents official statistics produced by the European Statistical System and disseminated by Eurostat. It covers the period from 2002 or 2008 up to the most recent year for which data are available (2014 or 2015)."

WSI Mitteilungen - vol. 69 n° 1 -

SEER. Journal for Labour and Social Affairs in Eastern Europe - vol. 16 n° 4 -

"This article aims to analyse freedom of movement of workers in the context of the new strategies for EU growth and employment. Freedom of movement of people, especially workers, is one of the four freedoms of the EU internal market. Migrant workers who move to another member state enjoy certain rights stipulated by EU laws and are important in terms of fulfilling the employment gap and creating new jobs. Europe 2020 is the EU's growth strategy for the next period and embodies five ambitious objectives – employment; innovation; education; social inclusion; and climate/energy. Each member state has adopted its own national targets in each of these areas, while concrete actions at EU and national levels underpin the Strategy. These goals will not be fulfilled if freedom of movement is not realised, whereas the agenda for new skills and jobs has the objective of creating the right conditions to modernise labour markets. The author goes on to analyse the elimination of impediments to freedom of movement regarding the goals set in the new strategy."

"Success in raising employment levels and living standards in Europe depends on effective support policies as well as positive macro-economic strategies. In this respect, this year's Employment and Social Developments review addresses a range of issues.
It starts by looking at the contribution of entrepreneurship and self-employment to job creation and growth and the need to tackle the difficulties faced by the self-employed and notably micro and small companies. It then looks at the role of labour legislation in supporting more and better jobs and the need to strike the right balance between flexibility and protection. It then moves on to look at the best actions to avoid unemployment turning into long-term unemployment and inactivity. More broadly, given technology change, globalisation and population ageing, which translates into a reduction in the working-age population, the EU needs to increase employment and increase productivity. Mobility and migration can play an important role here. In relation to this, Europe needs to improve skills and better match skills with evolving demands. It also needs to promote labour market participation of older workers and women. Social policies, including pension policies and family policies (for example, child care and long-term care), can support longer working lives and increase employment of women. Promoting social dialogue and the involvement of social partners in the development of employment and social policies may help the implementation and effectiveness of such policies.
The review is available in printed and electronic format in English. All the graphs and tables can be downloaded both in gif and excel format by accessing the individual chapters. "
