"This research project financed by the European Trade Union Institute (ETUI) was composed of three phases:

Phase 1: Estimating the fractions of cardiovascular diseases and depression attributable to five different psychosocial work exposures (PWE), i.e. job strain, effort-reward imbalance, job insecurity, long working hours and workplace bullying in Europe (35 countries, including all 28 European Union countries), for each country and all countries taken together, in 2015.
Phase 2: Estimating the annual burden of coronary heart disease (CHD), stroke, atrial fibrillation, peripheral artery disease and depression attributable to these PWE in 28 European Union countries (EU28) in 2015, in terms of prevalent cases, deaths, years of life lost (YLLs), years of life lost due to disability (YLDs) and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs).
Phase 3: Estimating the costs of CHD, stroke and depression attributable to PWE in EU28 in 2015. We presented the methods, the detailed results and the discussion related to phases 1 and 2 in an ETUI report (Sultan-Taïeb et al. 2023) and in four peerreviewed articles (Niedhammer et al. 2021; Niedhammer et al. 2024; Niedhammer et al. 2022; Sultan-Taïeb et al. 2022).
The present report is focused on the third phase of the project and presents the costs from the societal perspective of CHD and depression attributable to all the studied PWE taken together, and the costs of CHD, stroke and depression attributable to the different PWE taken separately in EU28 and by country, for men and women.
