"In March 1990 there was an incident of mob violence against Hungarian leaders in Tîrgu Mureș and, on the next day, a demonstration by the Hungarians asking for the punishment of the organisers was transformed into a street fight between the two ethnic groups. Three people died and a hundred were injured. In a few days, and justified with reference to the events in Tîrgu Mureș, the secret police were re-formed and an election campaign commenced based on heated speeches against Hungarians. As a result of the effectiveness of the former communists, the Romanian government was based on former communist and nationalist parties until 1996. However, the elections in 1996 saw a change: Romanian democratic parties, in alliance with the Hungarian movement (the Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania – DAHR), came to power. The new government quickly sought to change several restrictive laws regarding education in the Hungarian language and using Hungarian in public administration. However, even with the new political situation, the intentions have not been implemented in practice: the debates in Parliament on changing the laws have been transformed by nationalist sentiments, while a significant element of the deputies of the democratic parties also votes against change. The article provides a report on the actual (1999) situation of the Hungarians minorita in Romania."
