"The report examines the impact of the global economic crisis on the situation of women and men in Europe and on gender equality policies. It suggests that there has been a levelling down of gender gaps in employment, unemployment, wages, and poverty. Finds that the labour market behaviour of women has been similar to that of men. Argues that although there is evidence of contained but uneven retrenchment in welfare provision in the first years of the crisis, there is a threat that fiscal consolidation might ultimately reduce both welfare provision and related employment – with associated gender equality impacts. Finds that in the vast majority of countries gender mainstreaming has not been implemented in policy design and policy implementation over the crisis."

"Although the EU has made significant strides towards achieving gender equality over recent decades, women remain the principal victims of gender-based violence. The European Commission's Synthesis Report for 2010 on violence against women and the role of gender equality, social inclusion and health strategies analyses the social aspects of such violence. It aims to present a clear picture of the situation in EU Member States, EEA/EFTA and candidate countries regarding all types of violence directed at women, be they physical, sexual or psychological. The report begins by summarising the main features of violence against women in Europe. It then gives an overview of actions addressing this form of violence, in terms of prevention, victim support and social reintegration before presenting its final conclusions and their related policy implications. "

"Though significant progress has been made in increasing the quality of health care across the European Union, many inequalities persist. In particular, this report looks at the inequality in access to healthcare and long-term care between men and women in the EU. The synthesis presented in this comparative report by the Expert Group on Gender Equality, Social Inclusion, Health and Long-term Care Issues describes the main differences in the health status of women and men in European countries and examines how healthcare and long-term care systems respond to gender specific needs in ensuring equal access. The report considers the main financial, cultural and physical barriers to access and provides good practice examples of healthcare promotion, prevention and treatment programs, as well as of long-term care. It calls attention to the need for promoting gender mainstreaming in healthcare and long-term care."

"The Covid-19 pandemic has triggered simultaneously a global health crisis and a global economic crisis which have further deepened existing inequalities along several dimensions, including gender. Increasing gender inequalities in paid and unpaid work has been a primary outcome of the pandemic and the associated economic crisis. Given the disproportionate gender division of labor, women were foremost in bearing the brunt of the increased demands on unpaid care work under the lockdown conditions. At the same time, women were also overrepresented in informal employment and service sectors hard-hit by the pandemic resulting in more severe job loss for female workers overall. In many labor markets, women constituted the majority of so-called essential workers, who were protected from job loss yet exposed to increased health risks and prolonged work hours under distressed work conditions. The increasing demand for household production and the unpaid work burden contributed to weakening women's labor market attachment resulting in higher declines in female labor force participation than male. The increased prevalence of teleworking under the pandemic has the potential to provide improved work-life balance conditions, yet at the risk of widening the gender inequalities in the labor market. While these outcomes point to the threat that Covid-19 poses at rolling back the gains achieved in gender equality, the experiences under the pandemic conditions have also contributed to increased awareness around the Globe of the importance of caring labor and care workers, establishing a solid basis for advocacy of gender equal care policies."
