"This volume is a definitive, high–quality, one–volume collection of key primary texts for the study of bioethics. In its structure and content, the Anthology is intended to complement the Companion to Bioethics, edited by the same scholars. Drawing together the most important texts in the field, the volume will be of great value not only to philosophers, students of philosophy, and moral theologians, but also to doctors and nurses, sociologists and lawyers, and others working in health–care and biomedical sciences. Broadly based and of direct relevance to modern health–care dilemmas, Bioethics: An Anthology will also be of interest to the general reader.
Equipped with an extensive index and covering all the relevant areas in bioethics, this volume provides an accessible overview of the subject matter and serves as a reference work, making a unique contribution to the field by collecting the key texts on such varied topics as the new genetics and reproductive technologies, euthanasia, AIDS, animal and human experimentation, nursing ethics and medical ethics, and the teaching and practice of bioethics."

"Recent years have seen numerous appropriations of Thomas Aquinas's work by a range of theologians, from liberal Catholics to the creators of radical orthodoxy. Responding to this upsurge of interest, this book goes straight to the heart of the contemporary debates about Thomism.

Author Mark Jordan focuses on the concept of authority, both in terms of Aquinas's own attitude to authority and how the Church authorities have used Aquinas to shore up their own position. He shows how to read Aquinas from, into and against theological authorities, and argues for future readings of Thomas which are substantially different from those which have gone before."

"This volume, written by leading authorities from Eastern Europe, outlines the history of the health and environmental consequences of the Chernobyl disaster. Although there has been much discussion concerning the impacts of nuclear accidents, and Chernobyl in particular, never before has there been a comprehensive presentation of all the available information concerning the health and environmental effects of the low dose radioactive contaminants that were emitted from the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. The official discussions emanating from the IAEA and associated UN agencies (e.g. the Chernobyl Forum reports) have largely downplayed or ignored many of the findings reported in the Eastern European scientific literature and as a consequence these reports have erred on the side of negative findings simply because much of what was known was not included in their assessments. This new book provides a complete and extensive summary of all known research, including that published in Russian and Ukrainian, and provides new insights to the likely long term health and environmental consequences of nuclear accidents."

"This book provides the first intensive study focusing on building cleaners and their global experiences. It brings together an international group of scholars and experts to investigate different national contexts and examples; draws out important commonalities and highlights significant differences in these experiences; examines topics including erosion of cleaners' industrial citizenship rights, the impact of outsourcing upon their working conditions, economic security, and the intensification of their work and its negative effects on physical health; considers how cleaners are mobilizing to resist and respond to the restructuring of their work."

"The chances of a long and healthy life are unequal: there are large differences between men and women, between members of different ethnic groups, between regions and between social classes. Health inequality is of increasing concern in all developed countries, forming one of the WHO's Health for All by the Year 2000 targets. In the UK the New Labour government has commissioned an independent inquiry into its causes and consequences. Health inequality has to be studied in a way that breaks down the boundaries between medicine and social science. This collection of papers reflects this concern. It represents the contribution of the social sciences: sociology, economics, psychology, geography and social policy, to the understanding and alleviation of health inequality. "
