"Progress towards gender equality involves changes in the traditional parental division - female caring and male breadwinning. One aspect is increased parental leave for fathers, which may benefit the health of mothers, children, and fathers themselves. We examined how social and health characteristics (2002) were associated with paternity leave in excess of the ‘father quota' of 60 days (2003-2006) in the Stockholm Public Health Cohort. Generally, fathers with stable social position, fit lifestyles, and good health had increased chances of paternity leave uptake. Our findings may contribute to identifying target groups for parental leave strategies among fathers; they indicate also that research on gender equality and public health must carefully address the problems of confounding and health-related selection."

"Objectives No study so far has combined register-based socioeconomic information with self-reported information on health, demographics, work characteristics, and the social environment. The aim of this study was to investigate whether socioeconomic, health, demographic, work characteristics and social environmental characteristics independently predict working beyond retirement. Methods Questionnaire data from the Study on Transitions in Employment, Ability and Motivation were linked to data from Statistics Netherlands. A prediction model was built consisting of the following blocks: socioeconomic, health, demographic, work characteristics and the social environment. First, univariate analyses were performed (P0<.15), followed by correlations and logistic multivariate regression analyses with backward selection per block (P0<.15). All remaining factors were combined into one final model (P0<.05). Results In the final model, only factors from the blocks health, work and social environmental characteristics remained. Better physical health, being intensively physically active for >2 days/week, higher body height, and working in healthcare predicted working beyond retirement. If respondents had a permanent contract or worked in handcraft, or had a partner that did not like them to work until the official retirement age, they were less likely to work beyond retirement. Conclusion Health, work characteristics and social environment predicted working beyond retirement, but register-based socioeconomic and demographic characteristics did not independently predict working beyond retirement. This study shows that working beyond retirement is multifactorial."

"Objective
Most suicides occur among individuals of working age. Risk is elevated in some occupational groups, however relations between long-term occupational trajectories and suicide are not well known. We describe career-long occupational trajectories and examine their influence on suicide.
Methods
Data come from GAZEL, a French cohort study set among employees of a large national utilities company. Occupational grade was obtained from company records from the time of hiring (1953‒1988). Group-based trajectory models were used to define occupational trajectories over a mean time period of 25.0 (standard deviation 6.5) years. Causes of mortality, coded using the International Classification of Diseases, were recorded from 1993‒2014 and studied using Cox regression models.
Results
Of the 20 452 participants included in the study, 73 died by suicide between 1993‒2014. Results suggested an increased risk of suicide [hazard ratio (HR) 2.57, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.08–6.15] among participants with persistently low occupational grade compared to those with higher occupational grade and career development. After adjustment for all covariates, especially psychological factors, this association was reduced and no longer statistically significant (HR 2.02, 95% CI 0.82–4.95).
Conclusions
Persistently low occupational grade could be related to an elevated risk of suicide. This association partly reflects psychological and health characteristics, which can influence occupational trajectories and be reinforced by unfavorable work conditions."

"This paper examines the social status of amateur athletes in respect of discrimination they may encounter in comparison with professional athletes. It also addresses the issue of the Italian ‘vincolo sportivo' and correlative violations of EU law on the free movement of workers. Finally, some possible solutions are proposed."
