"PFAS (per and polyfluoroalkylsubstances) are known to be extremely difficult to degrade in the environment and to be bioaccumulative and toxic. Exposure to PFAS is suspected to increase the risk of adverse health effects, such as impacts on the thyroid gland, the liver, fat metabolism and the immune system. This study estimates the socioeconomic costs that may result from impacts on human health and the environment from the use of PFAS. Better awareness of the costs and problems associated with PFAS exposure will assist decision-makers and the general public to make more efficient and timely risk management decisions. Findings indicate that the costs are substantial, with annual health-related costs estimated to 2.8 – 4.6 billion EUR for the Nordic countries and 52 – 84 billion EUR for all EEA countries. Overall non-health costs are estimated at 46 million – 11 billion EUR for the Nordic countries. "

"The debate on the proposed European chemicals legislation reform (REACH) has largely focused on its financial costs to the industries affected. Since the Chemicals White Paper was published nearly five years ago, there has been a constant industry outcry that the reform is too bureaucratic, will be too costly to implement, and is driving industry straight towards offshoring and mass job losses. The strategy has paid off, because the version adopted by the Commission in October 2003 is a "REACH-lite" compared to that put out for public consultation on the Internet in May the same year. The demands on industry have been drastically scaled down to reduce the direct costs on it from 12.9 billion to 2.3 billion euros over 11 years."

"Recent studies have shown that human resource management practices such as training, participation or incentive compensation significantly contribute to firm performance (see, e.g., Huselid 1995; Ichniowski, Shaw and Prennushi 1997; Black and Lynch 1998; Bartel 2000; Zwick 2006). Although the human capital of the firm is not explicitly shown on the balance sheet, the value of the firm is at least in part driven by the value of the people who run the show. In this era of knowledge and information, continuous education and training of workers and employees is no longer an option but a must for most firms. This paper looks at the possible relation between employer provided training and firm performance for a sample of over 10,000 large Belgian firms. We first estimate a standard Cobb-Douglas production function to assess the firms' expected performance based on the input of capital and labour. Our results show that the extent to which a firm performs either better or worse than expected, can partly be explained by the relative number of workers or employees that participate in employer provided formal training or education programmes. In addition, training costs seem to have an impact as well. However, the amount that is spent per person only matters for non-manufacturing firms. This implies that targets set by international or local governments should focus first on training participation rather than on training costs. With this finding, we contribute to this field of research in two ways. First, our data are taken from the published financial statements. This allows us to work with auditor certified information that is available for all firms. Second, we include training costs in the analysis. "

Médecin salarié convaincu que l'application du "juste soin au juste coût" exigée par son éthique professionnelle s'accompagne mal des conflits d'intérêts, l'auteur critique les réformes mises en oeuvre qui visent à faire de la santé une marchandise comme les autres et de l'hôpital une entreprise : la tarification à l'activité dite "T2A" qui pousse les médecins à multiplier les actes rentables, le numerus clausus qui a conduit à la pénurie médicale actuelle et à l'importation de médecins étrangers, le développement de consortiums de cliniques privées commerciales, l'arrivée des assureurs privés sur le "marché de la santé".
Quel monde allons-nous laisser à notre jeunesse? A partir de son expérience personnelle, le professeur Grimaldi nous livre de nombreux exemples de cette déshumanisation à l'œuvre dans le service public, très souvent des cas ubuesques qui défient le bon sens. Une autre voie est pourtant possible: un système basé sur la solidarité faisant coexister un service public et un secteur privé à but non lucratif. "
