"This year's World Employment and Social Outlook: Trends examines global and regional trends in employment, unemployment, labour force participation and productivity, as well as dimensions of job quality such as employment status, informal employment and working poverty. It also provides extensive analysis of the crisis's varied impact on enterprises and workers.

The report forecasts that employment recovery, though strong, will be insufficient to close the gaps. Workers whose labour market position was disadvantageous prior to the crisis – women, young people, migrants, informal workers and workers in lower-skilled occupations – suffered disproportionately. The report proposes a human-centred recovery strategy to avoid scarring of global labour markets for the years to come."

"Building on strong local roots to address local development challenges, many social and solidarity economy (SSE) entities are increasingly extending their operations internationally. By responding to international social and environmental challenges, SSE entities can help make global value chains more inclusive and sustainable. With the pursuit of a social mission and participatory governance at the core of their operations, SSE entities adopt specific approaches to internationalise their presence. Some internationalise to scale their impact to reach more people and areas, while some do so to deepen their impact on existing target groups by leveraging resources internationally. This paper analyses what SSE internationalisation involves and its specific drivers (chapter 1), trends in SSE internationalisation (chapter 2), competitive advantages and barriers of the SSE for internationalisation (chapter 3), and actionable areas for policy makers to promote its internationalisation (chapter 4)."

The objective is to explain what they are and understand how these notions have evolved in recent decades. It also aims to capture and document the great diversity within social and solidarity economy organisations in terms of purposes, legal entities, business models and practices to help better characterise the “population” of social and solidarity economy entities."

"This policy paper explores the contribution of platform cooperatives to local development as an alternative model to conventional digital platforms. It considers their role in reducing potential negative effects of the digital transition on local communities and places, as well as the new opportunities they present to provide greater quality of life for local residents. The paper introduces the main features of platform cooperatives, explores their contributions to local development and identifies the challenges to their emergence and expansion. It then provides policy orientations that could support the development of platform cooperatives and enhance their contributions to local development.

"Platform cooperatives refer to cooperatives that are directly owned and managed by their members and that use websites and/or mobile apps to sell goods and/or services. They have emerged in large part as alternatives to digital labour platforms to promote better working conditions with evidence of significant growth in recent years.

This paper provides an overview of employment in platform cooperatives and offers insights on their distinctive features. In particular, it provides i) insights on working conditions associated with such platforms; ii) an overview on the challenges they face in creating jobs as well as scaling up, developing and expanding their activity; and iii) policy recommendations and examples of policy actions that could help policy makers best support them to generate work opportunities and enhance job quality.

"Cooperatives the world over are successfully developing alternative models of decision-making, employment and operation without the existence of managers, executives and hierarchies. Through case studies spanning the US, Latin America and Europe, including valuable new work on the previously neglected cooperative movement in Cuba, Peter Ranis explores how cooperatives have evolved in response to the economic crisis. Going further yet, Ranis makes the novel argument that the constitutionally enshrined principle of 'eminent domain' can in fact be harnessed to create and defend worker cooperatives. Combining the work of key radical theorists, including Marx, Gramsci and Luxemburg, with that of contemporary political economists, such as Block, Piketty and Stiglitz, Cooperatives Confront Capitalism provides what is perhaps the most far-reaching analysis yet of the ideas, achievements and wider historical context of the cooperative movement."

"Comprenant environ 200 membres, la Fonda rassemble, pour l'essentiel, des personnes engagées dans une action associative et / ou d'économie sociale et solidaire, ou dans leur promotion. Résolument tournée vers la mutualisation des savoirs et vers l'avenir, cette association a engagé en 2010 une démarche prospective, « Faire ensemble 2020 », destinée à explorer l'avenir du fait associatif en France, afin que les acteurs du secteur puissent discerner les grands enjeux à venir et en tenir compte dans leur stratégie. Hélène Bonvalot, qui a coordonné cette démarche jusqu'en juillet 2014, nous en présente ici la teneur et les enseignements à en tirer.Après avoir présenté les grandes caractéristiques du secteur et la méthode utilisée lors de cet exercice prospectif, elle montre combien les associations se trouvent aujourd'hui à la croisée des chemins, dans une société traversée par trois grands courants (fragmentation des schémas institutionnels, fluidité des rapports sociaux et empathie), dans un monde en crise et en transition. Ce contexte est porteur d'opportunités importantes pour le monde associatif car il peut ouvrir la voie à de nouveaux modèles partenariaux, qu'il s'agisse de participer à la mise en œuvre de nouvelles régulations, de favoriser l'articulation entre local et global, de s'inscrire dans les logiques socio-économiques émergentes (économie circulaire, collaborative…), etc. Charge aux acteurs du secteur de savoir les saisir et de participer ainsi à la construction d'un avenir plus choisi que subi dans cette phase (longue) de transition."
