"This article examines the revitalization of trade unions and reemergence of industrial conflict in Argentina, following the neo-liberal reforms of the government of Carlos Menem. The case of two unions in the vegetable oil industry is examined in detail. The research revealed that the key factors which accounted for differences in the effectiveness of the two unions included the following: the capacity of the unions to mobilize the workforce, the origins of the companies' capital, and the political and economic environment in which both the unions and the employers operated."
